Saúl Álvarez (Canelo) was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico on July 18, 1990. He made his professional debut at the age of 15 years on October 29, 2005 against Abraham Gonzalez. Canelo defeated Gonzalez via 4th round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Canelo became a world champion at the age of 20 after 36 professional fights. He challenged Matthew Hatton for the vacant WBC super-welterweight title and defeated Hatton via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
