Jermell Charlo was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, U.S. on May 19, 1990. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on December 8, 2007 against Corey Sommerville. Charlo defeated Sommerville via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Charlo became a world champion at the age of 26 after 27 professional fights. He challenged John Jackson for the vacant WBC super-welterweight title and stopped Jackson in the 8th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.

He then went on to successfully win the WBA, IBF, The Ring, and WBO super-welterweight world titles as well — and undisputed at super-welterweight.

Charlo's latest fight was a unanimous decision loss to Canelo Álvarez at age 33, on September 30, 2023, in which he was fighting for the undisputed super-middleweight world championship.
