Sergey Kovalev was born in Kopeysk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union on April 2, 1983. He made his professional debut at the age of 26 years on July 25, 2009 against Daniel Chavez. Kovalev defeated Chavez via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Kovalev became a world champion at the age of 30 after 22 professional fights. He challenged Nathan Cleverly for the WBO light-heavyweight title and stopped the champion in the 4th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the WBA and IBF light-heavyweight world titles as well.
Kovalev's latest fight was a unanimous decision loss to Robin Sirwan Safar at age 41, on May 18, 2024.
