Kermit Cintrón was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on October 22, 1979. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on October 7, 2000 against Jesse Williams. Cintrón defeated Williams via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Cintrón got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 24 professional fights. On April 23, 2005 Cintrón challenged Antonio Margarito's WBO welterweight title but lost via 5th round TKO.

He became a world champion on October 28, 2006 at the age of 27 years, after by defeating Mark Suárez, the then-reining IBF welterweight champion, via 5th round TKO. This was his 28th fight as a professional.

Cintrón's last fight was a no-contest against Marquis Taylor on February 13, 2018.
