Boxing Career

Bernard Hopkins was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. on January 15, 1965. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on October 11, 1988 against Clinton Mitchell. Hopkins lost to Mitchell via 4-round majority decision. Not a good start!

Hopkins got his first shot at a world title at the age of 28 after 23 professional fights. On May 22, 1993 Hopkins challenged Roy Jones Jr.'s IBF middleweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.

He became a world champion on April 29, 1995 at the age of 30 years, after by defeating Segundo Mercado in a clash for the vacant IBF middleweight champion. Hopkins stopped Mercado in the 7th round of the 12-round world-title fight. This was his 30th fight as a professional.

Hopkins then went on to successfully win the light-heavyweight (The Ring, WBC, IBF, WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion — and undisputed at middleweight.

Hopkins' last fight was an 8th-round TKO loss to Joe Smith Jr. at age 51, on December 17, 2016.
