Keith Holmes was born in Washington, D.C., United States on March 30, 1969. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on October 26, 1989 against Kilpatrick Mitchell. Holmes defeated Mitchell via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Holmes became a world champion at the age of 26 after 29 professional fights. He challenged Quincy Taylor for the WBC middleweight title and stopped the champion in the 9th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
Holmes' last fight was an unanimous decision victory over Willis Lockett at age 40, on June 6, 2009.
