Dingaan Thobela was born in Soweto, South Africa, South Africa on September 24, 1966. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on April 27, 1990 against Mauricio Aceves. Thobela defeated Aceves via 7th round RTD, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Thobela became a world champion at the age of 23 after 2 professional fights. He challenged Mauricio Aceves for the WBO lightweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round split decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the super-middleweight (WBC) title also to become a two-division world champion.
