Tony Lopez was born in Sacramento, California, U.S. on February 24, 1963. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on May 3, 1983 against Juan Rodriguez. Lopez defeated Rodriguez via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Lopez became a world champion at the age of 25 after 30 professional fights. He challenged Rocky Lockridge for the IBF super-featherweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.

He then went on to successfully win the lightweight (WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion.

Lopez' last fight was a 1st-round TKO loss to Hector Quiroz at age 35, on February 20, 1999.
