Fernando Vargas was born in Oxnard, California, U.S. on December 7, 1977. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on March 25, 1997 against Jorge Morales. Vargas defeated Morales via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Vargas became a world champion at the age of 21 after 14 professional fights. He challenged Yori Boy Campas for the IBF super-welterweight title and stopped the champion in the 7th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.

He then went on to successfully win the WBA super-welterweight world title as well.

Vargas' last fight was a majority decision loss to Ricardo Mayorga at age 29, on November 23, 2007.
