Steve Collins was born in Cabra, Ireland on July 21, 1964. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on October 24, 1986 against Julio Mercado. Collins defeated Mercado via 3rd round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Collins got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 16 professional fights. On February 3, 1990 Collins challenged Mike McCallum's WBA middleweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.
He became a world champion on May 11, 1994 at the age of 29 years, after by defeating Chris Pyatt, the then-reining WBO middleweight champion, via 5th round TKO. This was his 31st fight as a professional.
Collins then went on to successfully win the super-middleweight (WBO) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
