Tony Thornton was born in Glassboro, New Jersey, U.S. on November 8, 1959. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on June 15, 1983 against Steve Waters. Thornton defeated Waters via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Thornton got his first shot at a world title at the age of 32 after 36 professional fights. On September 19, 1992 Thornton challenged Chris Eubank's WBO super-middleweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.
Thornton's last fight was a 3rd-round TKO loss to Roy Jones Jr. at age 35, on September 30, 1995, in which he was fighting for the IBF super-middleweight title.
