Julian Jackson was born in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands on September 12, 1960. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on February 2, 1981 against Inocencio Carmona. Jackson defeated Carmona via 4 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Jackson got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 29 professional fights. On August 23, 1986 Jackson challenged Mike McCallum's WBA super-welterweight title but lost via 2nd round TKO.
He became a world champion on November 21, 1987 at the age of 27 years, after by defeating Baek In-chul, the then-reining WBA super-welterweight champion, via 3rd round TKO. This was his 33rd fight as a professional.
Jackson then went on to successfully win the middleweight (WBC) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
