Gerald McClellan was born in Freeport, Illinois, U.S. on October 23, 1967. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on August 12, 1988 against Roy Hundley. McClellan defeated Hundley via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

McClellan became a world champion at the age of 24 after 24 professional fights. He challenged John Mugabi for the vacant WBO middleweight title and stopped Mugabi in the 1st of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.

He then went on to successfully win the WBC middleweight world title as well.

McClellan's last fight was a 10th-round KO loss to Nigel Benn at age 27, on February 25, 1995, in which he was fighting for the WBC super-middleweight title.
