Thomas Tate was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA on December 19, 1965. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on February 12, 1989 against Maurice Daugherty. Tate defeated Daugherty via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Tate got his first shot at a world title at the age of 26 after 25 professional fights. On August 1, 1992 Tate challenged Julian Jackson's WBC middleweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.
Tate's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Sven Ottke at age 36, on June 1, 2002, in which he was fighting for the IBF super-middleweight title.
