Baek In-Chul was born in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea on December 20, 1961. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on May 9, 1980 against Joong-Jung Park. In-Chul defeated Park via 2nd round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
In-Chul got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 42 professional fights. On November 21, 1987 In-Chul challenged Julian Jackson's WBA super-welterweight title but lost via 3rd round TKO.
He became a world champion on May 28, 1989 at the age of 27 years, after by defeating Fulgencio Obelmejias, the then-reining WBA super-middleweight champion, via 11th round TKO. This was his 47th fight as a professional.
