Naoya Inoue was born in Zama, Kanagawa, Japan on April 10, 1993. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on October 2, 2012 against Crison Omayao. Inoue defeated Omayao via 4th round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Inoue became a world champion at the age of 20 after 5 professional fights. He challenged Adrián Hernández for the WBC light-flyweight title and stopped the champion in the 6th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
