Kohei Kono was born in Nakakoma District, Yamanashi, Japan on November 23, 1980. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on November 22, 2000 against Toshiaki Nitta. Kono lost to Nitta via 4-round majority decision. Not a good start!
Kono got his first shot at a world title at the age of 27 after 24 professional fights. On September 15, 2008 Kono challenged Nobuo Nashiro's WBA super-flyweight title but lost via 12-round split decision.
He became a world champion on December 31, 2012 at the age of 32 years, after by defeating Tepparith Singwancha in a clash for the vacant WBA super-flyweight champion. Kono stopped Singwancha in the 4th round of the 12-round world-title fight. This was his 35th fight as a professional.
Kono's last fight was a 6th-round RTD loss to Jason Moloney at age 37, on May 19, 2018.
