Ernie Terrell was born in Belzoni, Mississippi, U.S. on April 4, 1939. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on May 15, 1957 against Norman Bolden. Terrell defeated Bolden via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Terrell became a world champion at the age of 25 after 40 professional fights. He challenged Eddie Machen for the vacant WBA heavyweight title and defeated Machen via 15-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
Terrell's last fight was a 1st-round TKO loss to Jeff Merritt at age 34, on September 10, 1973.
