Thulani Malinga was born in Ladysmith, South Africa on December 11, 1955. He made his professional debut at the age of 25 years on August 8, 1981 against Victor Zulu. Malinga defeated Zulu via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Malinga got his first shot at a world title at the age of 33 after 28 professional fights. On January 27, 1989 Malinga challenged Graciano Rocchigiani's IBF super-middleweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.

He became a world champion on March 2, 1996 at the age of 40 years, after by defeating Nigel Benn, the then-reining WBC super-middleweight champion, via 12-round split decision. This was his 50th fight as a professional.
