Gerrie Coetzee (The Boksburg Bomber) was a South African professional boxer. He was a heavyweight world champion. In a career spanning 22 years, 8 months, and 25 days, Coetzee amassed a record of 33-6-1, which includes 21 wins via KO, 1 of which was in a world-title fight.
Gerrie Coetzee was born in Boksburg, East Rand, Gauteng, South Africa on April 8, 1955. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on September 14, 1974 against Chris Roos. Coetzee defeated Roos via 4 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Coetzee got his first shot at a world title at the age of 24 after 22 professional fights. On October 20, 1979 Coetzee challenged John Tate's WBA heavyweight title but lost via 15-round unanimous decision.
He became a world champion on September 23, 1983 at the age of 28 years, after by defeating Michael Dokes in a clash for the vacant WBA heavyweight champion. Coetzee stopped Dokes in the 10th round of the 15-round world-title fight. This was his 33rd fight as a professional.
Coetzee's last fight was a 10th-round TKO loss to Iran Barkley at age 42, on June 8, 1997.
