Leon Spinks was born in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S. on July 11, 1953. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on January 15, 1977 against Bob Smith. Spinks defeated Smith via 5th round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Spinks became a world champion fight at the age of 24 after 7 professional fights. He challenged Muhammad Ali for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring heavyweight titles and defeated the champion via 15-round split decision, winning his first world titles. With this win, he also became the undisputed heavyweight world champion — in his very first world-title fight.
Spinks' last fight was an unanimous decision loss to Fred Houpe at age 42, on December 4, 1995.
