Dwight Muhammad Qawi was born in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S. on January 5, 1953. He made his professional debut at the age of 25 years on April 19, 1978 against Leonard Langley. The fight ended in a draw.

Qawi became a world champion fight at the age of 28 after 17 professional fights. He challenged Matthew Saad Muhammad for the WBC and The Ring light-heavyweight titles and stopped the champion in the 10th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world titles.

He then went on to successfully win the cruiserweight (WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion.

Qawi's last fight was an unanimous decision loss to Tony LaRosa at age 45, on November 25, 1998.
