John Mugabi was born in Kampala, Uganda on March 4, 1960. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on December 5, 1980 against Oemer Karadenis. Mugabi defeated Karadenis via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Mugabi got his first world-title fight at the age of 26 after 25 professional fights. On March 10, 1986 Mugabi challenged Marvelous Marvin Hagler's WBA, WBC, IBF, and The Ring middleweight titles but lost via 11th round KO.
He became a world champion on July 8, 1989 at the age of 29 years, after by defeating René Jacquot, the then-reining WBC super-welterweight champion, via 1st round TKO. This was his 36th fight as a professional.
