Ismael Laguna (El Tigre Colonense) is a 81-year-old retired Panamanian professional boxer. He is a former lightweight world champion with 6 world-title wins. In a career spanning 11 years and 23 days, Laguna amassed a record of 65-9-1, which includes 37 wins via KO, 2 of which were in world-title fights. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2001.
Ismael Laguna was born in Colón, Panama on June 28, 1943. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on August 21, 1960 against Antonio Morgan. Laguna defeated Morgan via 2nd round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Laguna became a world champion fight at the age of 21 after 40 professional fights. He challenged Carlos Ortiz for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring lightweight titles and defeated the champion via 15-round majority decision, winning his first world titles. With this win, he also became the undisputed lightweight world champion — in his very first world-title fight.
Laguna's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Ken Buchanan at age 28, on September 13, 1971, in which he was fighting for the WBA and The Ring lightweight titles.
