Carlos Ortiz was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on September 9, 1936. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on February 14, 1955 against Harry Bell. Ortiz defeated Bell via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Ortiz became a world champion at the age of 25 after 40 professional fights. He challenged Joe Brown for the The Ring lightweight title and defeated the champion via 15-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the WBA and WBC lightweight world titles as well — and undisputed at lightweight.
