Jersey Joe Walcott (Jersey Joe) was an American professional boxer. He was a heavyweight world champion. In a career spanning 22 years, 8 months, and 6 days, Walcott amassed a record of 51-18-2, which includes 32 wins via KO, 1 of which was in a world-title fight. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1990.
Jersey Joe Walcott was born in Camden, New Jersey, U.S. on January 31, 1914. He made his professional debut at the age of 16 years on September 9, 1930 against Eddie Wallace. Walcott defeated Wallace via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Walcott got his first shot at a world title at the age of 33 after 57 professional fights. On December 5, 1947 Walcott challenged Joe Louis' The Ring heavyweight title but lost via 15-round split decision.
He became a world champion on July 18, 1951 at the age of 37 years, after by defeating Ezzard Charles, the then-reining The Ring heavyweight champion, via 7th round KO. This was his 68th fight as a professional.
Walcott's last fight was a 1st-round KO loss to Rocky Marciano at age 39, on May 15, 1953, in which he was fighting for The Ring heavyweight title.
