Ezzard Charles (Cincinnati Cobra) was an American professional boxer. He was a heavyweight world champion. In a career spanning 19 years, 5 months, and 20 days, Charles amassed a record of 95-25-1, which includes 52 wins via KO, 2 of which were in world-title fights. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1990.
Ezzard Charles was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, U.S. on July 7, 1921. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on March 12, 1940 against Melody Johnson. Charles defeated Johnson via 4th round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Charles became a world champion at the age of 29 after 72 professional fights. He challenged Joe Louis for the The Ring heavyweight title and defeated the champion via 15-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
Charles' last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Alvin Green at age 38, on September 1, 1959.
