Gary Russell Jr.

Gary Russell Jr. was born in Washington, D.C., U.S. on June 5, 1988. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on January 16, 2009 against Antonio Reyes. Russell Jr. defeated Reyes via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Russell Jr. got his first shot at a world title at the age of 26 after 24 professional fights. On June 21, 2014 Russell Jr. challenged Vasyl Lomachenko's WBO featherweight title but lost via 12-round majority decision.

He became a world champion on March 28, 2015 at the age of 26 years, after by defeating Jhonny González in a clash for the vacant WBC featherweight champion. Russell Jr. stopped González in the 4th round of the 12-round world-title fight. This was his 27th fight as a professional.

Russell Jr.'s latest fight was a majority decision loss to Mark Magsayo at age 33, on January 22, 2022, in which he lost his WBC featherweight title.
