Jimmy Ellis was born in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. on February 24, 1940. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on April 19, 1961 against Arley Seifer. Ellis defeated Seifer via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Ellis became a world champion at the age of 28 after 30 professional fights. He challenged Jerry Quarry for the vacant WBA heavyweight title and defeated Quarry via 15-round majority decision, winning his first world title.

Ellis' last fight was a 1st-round KO victory over Carl Baker at age 35, on May 6, 1975.
