Clinton Woods was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England on May 1, 1972. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on November 17, 1994 against Dave Proctor. Woods defeated Proctor via 6 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Woods got his first world-title fight at the age of 30 after 33 professional fights. On September 7, 2002 Woods challenged Roy Jones Jr.'s WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and The Ring light-heavyweight titles but lost via 6th round TKO.

He became a world champion on March 4, 2005 at the age of 32 years, after by defeating Rico Hoye, the then-reining IBF light-heavyweight champion, via 5th round TKO. This was his 41st fight as a professional.
