Wayne Braithwaite was born in Georgetown, Guyana on August 9, 1975. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on February 28, 1997 against John Douglas. Braithwaite defeated Douglas via 4th round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Braithwaite became a world champion at the age of 27 after 17 professional fights. He challenged Vincenzo Cantatore for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title and stopped Cantatore in the 10th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
