Yoan Pablo Hernández was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba on October 28, 1984. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on September 3, 2005 against David Vicena. Hernández defeated Vicena via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Hernández became a world champion at the age of 26 after 25 professional fights. He challenged Steve Cunningham for the IBF cruiserweight title and defeated the champion via 6 round technical decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the The Ring cruiserweight world title as well.
