Freddie Norwood was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, U.S. on February 14, 1970. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on August 20, 1989 against Mario Amparan. Norwood defeated Amparan via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Norwood became a world champion at the age of 28 after 30 professional fights. He challenged Antonio Cermeño for the vacant WBA featherweight title and defeated Cermeño via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.

Norwood's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Ray Narh at age 41, on March 4, 2011.
