Ray Beltrán was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico on July 23, 1981. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on July 2, 1999 against Victor Manuel Mendoza. Beltrán defeated Mendoza via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Beltrán got his first shot at a world title at the age of 32 after 34 professional fights. On September 7, 2013 Beltrán challenged Ricky Burns' WBO lightweight title but lost via 12-round split decision.
He became a world champion on February 16, 2018 at the age of 36 years, after by defeating Paulus Moses, the then-reining WBO lightweight champion, via 12-round unanimous decision. This was his 43rd fight as a professional.
Beltrán's latest fight was a unanimous decision loss to Cesar Francis at age 40, on July 9, 2022.
