Carmen Basilio (The Upstate Onion Farmer) was an American professional boxer. He was a two-weightclass world champion with 3 world-title wins. In a career spanning 12 years, 4 months, and 29 days, Basilio amassed a record of 56-16-7, which includes 27 wins via KO, 4 of which were in world-title fights. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1990.
Carmen Basilio was born in Canastota, New York on April 2, 1927. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on November 24, 1948 against Jimmy Evans. Basilio defeated Evans via 3rd round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Basilio got his first shot at a world title at the age of 26 after 50 professional fights. On September 18, 1953 Basilio challenged Kid Gavilan's The Ring welterweight title but lost via 15-round split decision.
He became a world champion on June 10, 1955 at the age of 28 years, after by defeating Tony DeMarco, the then-reining The Ring welterweight champion, via 12th round TKO. This was his 63rd fight as a professional.
Basilio then went on to successfully win the middleweight (The Ring) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
Basilio's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Paul Pender at age 34, on April 22, 1961, in which he was fighting for The Ring middleweight title.
