Meldrick Taylor was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. on October 19, 1966. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on November 15, 1984 against Luke Lecce. Taylor defeated Lecce via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Taylor became a world champion at the age of 21 after 20 professional fights. He challenged Buddy McGirt for the IBF super-lightweight title and stopped the champion in the final round of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the welterweight (WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
Taylor's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Wayne Martell at age 35, on July 20, 2002.
