Paulie Ayala was born in Fort Worth, Texas, U.S. on April 22, 1970. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on November 27, 1992 against Jaime Olvera. Ayala defeated Olvera via 6 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Ayala got his first shot at a world title at the age of 28 after 25 professional fights. On August 23, 1998 Ayala challenged Joichiro Tatsuyoshi's WBC bantamweight title but lost via 6 round technical decision.
He became a world champion on June 26, 1999 at the age of 29 years, after by defeating Johnny Tapia, the then-reining WBA bantamweight champion, via 12-round unanimous decision. This was his 29th fight as a professional.
Ayala then went on to successfully win the super-bantamweight (The Ring) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
Ayala's last fight was a 10th-round TKO loss to Marco Antonio Barrera at age 34, on June 19, 2004.
