Mark Breland was born in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. on May 11, 1963. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on November 15, 1984 against Dwight Williams. Breland defeated Williams via 6-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Breland became a world champion at the age of 23 after 16 professional fights. He challenged Harold Volbrecht for the vacant WBA welterweight title and stopped Volbrecht in the 7th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world title.
