Sven Ottke was born in Berlin-Spandau, West Germany on June 3, 1967. He made his professional debut at the age of 29 years on March 22, 1997 against Eric Davis. Ottke defeated Davis via 6 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Ottke became a world champion at the age of 31 after 12 professional fights. He challenged Charles Brewer for the IBF super-middleweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round split decision, winning his first world title.

He then went on to successfully win the WBA super-middleweight world title as well.
