Yoshihiro Kamegai was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan on November 12, 1982. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on November 5, 2005 against Chainarong Sithsaithong. Kamegai defeated Sithsaithong via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Kamegai got his first shot at a world title at the age of 34 after 32 professional fights. On August 26, 2017 Kamegai challenged Miguel Cotto's WBO super-welterweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision. Kamegai never got a world-title shot again.
