Tim Witherspoon's Boxing Career

Tim Witherspoon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. on December 27, 1957. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on October 30, 1979 against Joe Adams. Witherspoon defeated Adams via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Witherspoon got his first world-title fight at the age of 25 after 15 professional fights. On May 20, 1983 Witherspoon challenged Larry Holmes' WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles but lost via 12-round split decision.

He became a world champion on March 9, 1984 at the age of 26 years, after by defeating Greg Page, the then-reining WBC heavyweight champion, via 12-round majority decision. This was his 19th fight as a professional.

Witherspoon then went on to successfully win the WBA heavyweight world title as well.

Witherspoon's last fight was a split decision loss to Brian Nix at age 45, on March 15, 2003.
