Johnny Nelson's Boxing Career

Johnny Nelson was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England on January 4, 1967. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on March 18, 1986 against Peter Brown. Nelson lost to Brown via 6 round points decision. Not a good start!

Nelson got his first shot at a world title at the age of 23 after 20 professional fights. On January 27, 1990 Nelson challenged Carlos De Leon's WBC cruiserweight title but lost via 12-round split decision.

He became a world champion on March 27, 1999 at the age of 32 years, after by defeating Carl Thompson, the then-reining WBO cruiserweight champion, via 5th round TKO. This was his 45th fight as a professional.

Nelson's last fight was a split decision victory over Vincenzo Cantatore at age 38, on November 26, 2005, in which he successfully defended his WBO cruiserweight championship.
