Roberto Carlos Leyva was born in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico on October 27, 1979. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on February 21, 1998 against Jose Luis Araiza. Leyva defeated Araiza via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Leyva became a world champion at the age of 21 after 18 professional fights. He challenged Daniel Reyes for the vacant IBF strawweight title and defeated Reyes via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
Leyva's last fight was a 3rd-round KO loss to Wilfredo Vázquez Jr. at age 32, on October 29, 2011.
