Iván Calderón was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on January 27, 1975. He made his professional debut at the age of 26 years on February 17, 2001 against Sergio Diaz. Calderón defeated Diaz via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Calderón became a world champion at the age of 28 after 15 professional fights. He challenged Eduardo Ray Marquez for the WBO strawweight title and defeated the champion via 9 round technical decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the light-flyweight (WBO, The Ring) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
Calderón's last fight was a 5th-round TKO loss to Moisés Fuentes at age 37, on October 6, 2012, in which he was fighting for the WBO strawweight title.
