Axel Schulz was born in Bad Saarow, Bezirk Frankfurt, East Germany on November 9, 1968. He made his professional debut at the age of 21 years on October 5, 1990 against George Ajio. Schulz defeated Ajio via 6-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Schulz got his first shot at a world title at the age of 26 after 23 professional fights. On April 22, 1995 Schulz challenged George Foreman's IBF heavyweight title but lost via 12-round majority decision.
