Kuniaki Shibata's Boxing Career

Kuniaki Shibata was born in Hitachi, Japan on March 29, 1947. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on March 6, 1965 against Seiichi Iizuka. Shibata defeated Iizuka via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Shibata became a world champion fight at the age of 23 after 35 professional fights. He challenged Vicente Saldivar for the WBC and The Ring featherweight titles and stopped the champion in the 12th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world titles.

He then went on to successfully win the super-featherweight (WBA, The Ring, WBC) titles also to become a two-division world champion.

Shibata's last fight was a points decision victory over Al Espinosa at age 30, on November 29, 1977.
