Ryōta Murata was born in Nara, Nara Prefecture, Japan on January 12, 1986. He made his professional debut at the age of 27 years on August 25, 2013 against Akio Shibata. Murata defeated Shibata via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Murata got his first shot at a world title at the age of 31 after 12 professional fights. On May 20, 2017 Murata challenged Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam's WBA (Regular) middleweight title but lost via 12-round split decision.
In his next fight, he got another shot at the middleweight WBA (Regular) (vacant) title. This time he defeated N'Jikam via 12-round split decision, winning his first world title.
