John Avila was born in Reno, Nevada, U.S. on December 24, 1972. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on November 29, 1991 against Lupe Landin. Avila defeated Landin via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Avila got his first shot at a world title at the age of 21 after 22 professional fights. On December 10, 1994 Avila challenged Oscar De La Hoya's WBO lightweight title but lost via 9th round TKO. Avila never got a world-title shot again.
