Duk-koo Kim was born in Goseong County, Gangwon, South Korea on July 29, 1955. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on December 7, 1978 against Myung Soo Park. Kim defeated Park via 4 round points decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Kim got his first shot at a world title at the age of 27 after 19 professional fights. On November 13, 1982 Kim challenged Ray Mancini's WBA lightweight title but lost via 14th round KO. Kim never got a world-title shot again.
