Julio César Green was born in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic on May 19, 1967. He made his professional debut at the age of 23 years on October 30, 1990 against Bill Robinson. Green defeated Robinson via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Green got his first shot at a world title at the age of 28 after 20 professional fights. On June 16, 1995 Green challenged Carl Daniels' WBA super-welterweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.

He became a world champion on August 23, 1997 at the age of 30 years, after by defeating William Joppy in a clash for the vacant WBA middleweight champion. Green won the fight via 12-round unanimous decision. This was his 24th fight as a professional.
